In the master’s degree program Automotive Engineering and Transport the IFS offers three modules in specialisation in Material Handling Technology, as elective courses.

Discontinuous Conveyors

Starting from the general considerations about all the means of conveyance, the lecture Discontinuous Conveyors deals particularly with lifting conveyors (especially cranes). After an overview and the classification according to the structural design, selected components of the discontinuous conveyors are considered. Hoist units, carriages and both slewing and luffing gears are described regarding their construction. For the calculation of the drivetrains, great emphasis is placed on the consideration of dynamic effects. Most of the cranes are rail-borne means of transport with broad gauge and low driving speed. The driving behaviour can be described theoretically in order to choose a suitable drivetrain and improve the track guidance. Load handling attachments (e.g. grippers), rope reeving systems and other components of lifting conveyors are machine elements of the material handling technology. These elements are described in detail and their calculation principles are explained.

Continuous Conveyors

After an overview and the classification of the continuous conveyors, important structural designs are shortly described in this course. The conveyed product represents a classification feature for continuous conveyors, and their characteristics regarding transport and storage determine the choice of the conveyor. Additionally, the characteristics of the transported goods are explained. The theory of the conveying process and the calculation of the resistance forces and the driving power, as well as the consideration of special and often dynamic effects, are shown in belt, screw and oscillating conveyors.

Material Flow Technology

Within the scope of this lecture, the principles of the material flow technology are imparted. The interaction of means of conveyance, control and organisation leads to conveyor systems that solve complex transport and storage problems. The fundamental construction of conveyor systems and general procedures for the material flow planning are described. Besides, system loads, strategies, control units and procedures to calculate the system behaviour are explained. The main emphasis lies on automated conveyors systems for transport of goods and analytic processes for transport control.
