IFS-seminar in a new atmosphere

The IFS, together with the German Machine Technology Society, organises traditionally a seminar on rail vehicle technology every year in December. The topic of the seminar this year was “Assisted, automated and autonomous driving”. Four invited experts from the industrial, operational and research branches threw light on the topic from their point of view. They reported on both the future of the rail transport and the current research and development activities, such as collision assistants for trams, automated shunting and more secure and unrestricted level crossings.

Almost 120 interested guests – some students among them – met at the lecture hall BS II in the main building of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, in front of the institute. The event was moved to the said hall due to the high number of participants.

The new head of the institute, Professor Christian Schindler, welcomed those present at the beginning and thanked his predecessor, Professor Torsten Dellmann, for the management of the event in previous years. A snack was offered at the institute at midday and there was time left for networking. At about 5 p.m. Professor Schindler said goodbye to the participants and he announced that in 2017 a two-day symposium will be organised in the Super-C of the RWTH instead of the traditional seminar, which will take place every two years from now on.
